Description
Swept fins are popular for windsurfing as the wind picks up. Deeper upright fins are more efficient in lighter wind and most high-speed applications. Sailors with skills from past the beginner stage to the leading World Cup sailors generally choose fins in this way. Weed fin designs present the biggest exception. More rake angle is necessary so that weeds are “shed” or swept away. Upright and swept fins will often catch the weeds causing spinout, poor performance, even a crash. In the same way, if the water is shallow or there are sandbars, crab pots etc., weed fins can smooth the impact, sometimes keeping you aboard rather than crashing.
